Packing Suggestions

Average temperatures in September range from 60°F to 75°F, with warmer days and cooler evenings, so be prepared for a mix of sunshine and breezy nights.We suggest you monitor weather apps before you depart for the most current information. • Items to ensure a good night’s sleep, such as earplugs, a white noise machine, or sleeping aids, as unfamiliar noises might affect your rest.

• Good Packing Habits—

• Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind – or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
• Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
• Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
• Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.

Luggage

On every SG tour, our policies regarding luggage restrictions are driven by the physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance. 

• It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much.
• You may bring one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
• Maximum suitcase size: 25-inches in height as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle. The small case in a 3-piece luggage set easily meets this requirement and should be plenty roomy for this length of trip.
• Suitcases larger than 25" in height will not fit in the SG transfer; don't bring them.
• The maximum weight of your suitcase should not exceed 50 pounds, as you will need to lift it into the coach luggage compartment.
• You are responsible for managing your own belongings.  We expect you to take your belongings from the coach to your room and to bring it back to the coach and load it on days we change hotels. We do not provide luggage pulls; they are not safe and are inconvenient. The possibility of steps exist at most hotel entrances.

Fitness

Walking is a key component of our tours. On some days, between walking tours and personal exploration. Although the activity level on this trip may not appear strenuous, we believe you will enjoy the tour more if you possess a general level of fitness and endurance.

Money

Only you can determine the optimum amount of cash to take on tour. When budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses, there are several aspects to consider:  the number of meals you are responsible for, the amount of money you like to have on-hand for snacks and drinks, and your individual shopping interests and habits.

• Notify your credit card issuer that you will be traveling and provide dates of travel.
• ATMs are typically the best way of obtaining cash; you must know your PIN number for your debit and credit cards in order to use the ATMs.

Tipping

All tips to local guides during your tour have already been paid on your behalf. 

• You are responsible for tipping wait-staff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel, or other public locations.
• You may want to tip your SG Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $10 per day.

Portugal in September has pleasant weather, with warm days and cooler nights, especially if you're near the coast. Here’s a packing list to ensure you're prepared for your trip:

Clothing:

• Lightweight tops (t-shirts, blouses, polos) – for warm daytime temperatures.
• Light sweater or jacket – evenings can get cooler, especially in coastal areas.
• Comfortable pants/jeans or skirts – for casual outings and cooler temperatures.
• Shorts or skirts – for warmer days.
• Dresses or light layers (for women) – easy for both daytime and evening wear.
• Swimwear – for beaches and hotel pools.
• Light scarf or shawl – for windy evenings or to cover shoulders when visiting religious sites.
• Undergarments and sleepwear – enough for your stay.

Shoes:

• Comfortable walking shoes – for exploring cities like Lisbon, Porto, and Sintra.
• Sandals – for casual strolls and beaches.
• Evening shoes (optional) – if you plan on dining out in fancier settings.

Accessories:

• Sunglasses and a hat – the sun can still be quite strong.
• Reusable water bottle – stay hydrated while exploring.
• Daypack or small crossbody bag – for day trips and excursions.
• Beach towel or sarong (optional) – if you plan to hit the beach.

Toiletries & Personal Care:

• Sunscreen – especially important in southern Portugal where the sun is stronger.
• Moisturizer and lip balm – the wind can dry out your skin, especially near the coast.
• Toothbrush, toothpaste, and other daily toiletries – deodorant, shampoo, etc.
• Hairbrush/comb and hair ties (if needed).
• Hand sanitizer and wet wipes – useful for travel.

Tech and Documents:

• Phone and charger – along with a portable power bank for long days out.
• Universal power adapter – Portugal uses European outlets (Type C and F, 220-240V).
• Camera (optional) – if you prefer it over your phone for photos.
• Travel documents – passport, tickets, accommodation info, travel insurance.
• Copies of important documents – digital and physical.

Miscellaneous:

• Light umbrella or rain jacket – September can have the occasional rain, especially in the north.
