Come take a trip to our host Dorina's small southern Italian village of Roseto Valfortore or the neighboring town of Alberona . Come Cook and learn why the “Roseto Effect” is sought the world over and fully evident in these villages.

Fall is harvest time in Puglia! Participate in 4-5 hands on cooking classes in our Cucina Pugliese. Enjoy a few day trips including nearby city of Lucera, Giuseppina and Nicola the cheesemakers, Monte Sant' Angelo, and a day in San Giovanni Rotondo where Saint Pio served.

Destination Information: In the 1880's people from Roseto Valfortore a small village in Southern Italy immigrated to the United States. They ended up in Eastern Pennsylvania where they found work in the Slate Mines. They built their own town on the side of a mountain and eventually named it after their homeland.

Roseto Pennsylvania was born.

Fast forward to the 1960's. A doctor serving the town shared with another doctor that no one in the town seemed to have any heart disease. The next thing you know, doctors descended upon the town to study the people.

The first thing they studied was the obvious: the diet. But, what they found when they studied the Rosetan diet was contrary to their beliefs. Even though they grew wonderful gardens, they ate a lot of salted, cured meats, fatty cheeses, food fried in lard,(no olive oil being imported back then!) were overweight and they smoked and drank... YET, they were healthy and happy!

People in this town lived 3 generations under one roof. They lived a community centered, church centered, family centered life. People spent time together, stopped and talked on their porches or while walking down the street. There was a true sense of community and belonging. No one was ever alone. They found that the Rosetans were nourished by each other.

Roseto, PA was built based on the traditions and values and way of life from their heritage and faith lived in their homeland- Roseto Valfortore Italy. Many other Rosetan immigrants built very similar communities in towns like Akron and Cleveland Ohio, Washington DC and in Toronto, Canada, but none were quite a unified community like that in Roseto, PA.

"The Roseto Effect is the phenomenon by which a close-knit community experiences a reduced rate of heart disease." BUT when you think about it...isn't it more than just that?

It is also lower incidences of other diseases, less mental health issues, less broken families, less crime, more love and support from family and friends, less loneliness and more attention. Isn't this what we all crave?

Our host and friend Dorina is reviving the Roseto Effect with cooking classes, trips to Italy and our Back to the Table Movement. What is included:

1. Transportation on day of arrival and departure from Naples airport-as long as you arrive in the scheduled time frame (unless you choose to come at a different time or to different airport or day, then that transportation will be extra).

2. Accommodations in a bed and breakfast which will include breakfast every day

3. First night Group WELCOME Dinner at a local restaurant to enjoy typical foods of the town.

4. Restaurant meals out of town-either on the beach, in the city or an agri-turismo.

5. 4-5 Cooking Classes with Chef Giuseppe Demonte and myself and some women from town (Chef is an Italian Chef Instructor... the best! and the Mamma’s from town... well no one makes pasta like they do!)

6. (for Roseto Heritage guests) There will be time to go to the town hall and look up family records! And an interpreter will always go with you to make sure you get what you need!

7. 2 interpreters (at least) -so there is never a worry about understanding what’s going on!

8. Meals at the conclusion of each class made by YOU!

9. Transportation for all excursions

11. Visits to various food production facilities--(ie- cheese maker, wine maker, olive oil maker etc. depending on the season)

Cancellation policy:

If you must cancel your reservation for a tour and/or its extension, monies paid will be refunded, less the following fees per person -per tour and/or extension.

$200 deposit fee is non-refundable

You have 72 hours from the time of deposit to receive 100% of your deposit. After 72 hours, $200 is non-refundable.

61-120 days 25% of trip price is non-refundable 31-60 days 50% of trip price is non-refundable 15-30 days 75% of trip price is non-refundable. 14-0 days 100% of trip price is non-refundable.

How Room Sharing Works

Traveling Solo? Most of the women on your tour are traveling solo!

If you wish to share with another solo traveler, select this option on the Reservation Form and your tour price will automatically be based on the room share price.

Or, you may select a single room, when available, on the Reservation Form and your tour price will be automatically based on the single room price.

These choices are clearly stated on the Reservation Form.

Special requests about your roommate can be accommodated

Most solo travelers elect to share a room

We are happy to pair you with a roommate, however, we prefer to introduce individuals by email exchange to see if you would be compatible with each other. We do not want anyone to feel uncomfortable.

When to Purchase Air: As soon as possible after your deposit has been applied. Should the tour not operate, regardless of reason, traveler is responsible for any penalties airlines may impose to rebook or cancel the ticket. Flight protection can be purchased directly with the airline at the time of booking to protect your options for your flight.

Important Reminders About This Tour

All travelers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 3 weeks prior to the tour start, and bring proof of vaccination with you, to join the tour.

Protect Your Travel Investment: In the era of COVID, travel insurance is more important than ever. SG will quote travel insurance on and individual basis. Often Travel Protection is offered on specific tours. All insurance policies offered are not included in the price of the trip.

Activity Rating

As a solo traveler you are responsible for yourself, your possessions, your physical fitness, and all other aspects related to participation in the SG tour you have chosen.

Because of this requirement, SG tours are not suitable for anyone who is physically challenged, walking impaired, or is a slow walker that cannot keep up with the pace of the group.

The activities on this tour are rated as follows:

Easy to moderate. Mostly walking on uneven surfaces as the villages and towns we will visit are hundreds of years old.

Activity levels are subjective and based on the reader's interpretation. Almost everyone overestimates their abilities. Therefore, it is your responsibility to read the itinerary and understand what you are doing throughout the tour.
